Police roll out security plan for festival period
The Kathmandu District Police Range has unveiled a special security plan for the upcoming Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals, with 3,506 police personnel to be mobilised in the Valley.

Everest, Kathmandu, Oct. 3-  The Kathmandu District Police Range has unveiled a special security plan for the upcoming Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals, with 3,506 police personnel to be mobilised in the Valley.

Speaking at a press conference organised to make the plan public on Friday, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Chief of the Kathmandu District Police Range, Dilip Ghimire, said the number could be increased if the security situation required additional manpower. SSP Ghimire said security personnel would be deployed in both uniform and plain clothes during the festival period.

Police have identified theft, fraud, robbery and misbehaviour in public places as major security challenges during the festivals. Bag snatching at busy junctions has also been included in the security assessment.

Police personnel will be assigned to 22 different types of duties. Security checks will be intensified at entry points, with sniffer dogs deployed and closed-circuit television cameras used for surveillance. Special attention will be given to crowded areas, public transport hubs, markets and other places expected to witness increased movement.

Police issue 13-point safety advisory

The Kathmandu District Police Range has also issued a 13-point safety advisory for people leaving the Valley for their hometowns during the festive season.

Police have urged people not to leave valuable jewellery, cash and important documents at home and to keep them safely in bank lockers where possible. Those leaving their homes or rented rooms have been advised to secure doors and windows properly and inform trusted neighbours or the police about their absence.

The public has been asked not to allow strangers into their homes, rooms or offices and to immediately inform the nearest police station or call 100 if they notice suspicious activities.

Police have also urged people to stay away from gambling and other illegal activities and avoid quarrels, unnecessary noise and anti-social behaviour after consuming alcohol. Travellers have been advised to keep cash, jewellery and other valuables secure.

Consumers have been asked to report cases of overcharging or cheating to the police or concerned authorities. Those making online purchases have been warned to remain cautious of fake websites, suspicious links and attractive offers circulated through social media.

The advisory also urges people to remain alert to fake tickets, fraud and illegal transactions and not to drink and drive. Motorists have been asked to strictly follow traffic rules.

People visiting crowded places have been advised to safeguard their belongings and pay particular attention to children and senior citizens. Police have also urged the public not to use firecrackers or other potentially dangerous materials.

Under the message, “Our Security, Our Responsibility,” police have called for public cooperation during the festival period. They have specifically warned against messages promising “quick earnings”, “lucky offers” or “prizes won”, saying such messages can be used for fraud.
